The former President of India Dr Pranab Mukherjee was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award of India on the 8th of August 2019 for the huge part he played in the shaping of Indian Politics. The Government released the list of Bharat Ratna recipients in January. The event took place in the Rashtrapati Bhavan with the Present Prime Minister Narendra Modi in attendance. His political career spanned over 5 decades during which he held many crucial positions. Pranab da as he is lovingly known is respected by all the politicians irrespective of them being in the opposition or not, such is the imprint he left on the People of India with his hardworking, kind and loyal nature.
He began his political career by managing the Midnapore elections for an individual candidate, the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi Recruited him into her party impressed with his skills, He later went onto to become a member of the Rajya Sabha. He soon became a trusted and loyal member of the Indian National Congress. Indira Gandhi even referred to him as “the man for all seasons”. He held several important portfolios in the cabinet across many years. He was also an active member of the cabinet during the controversial Emergency period in 1975. His work as the Finance Minister of India was recognized by Euromoney Magazine who rated him as the Best finance minister of the world.
Despite being sidelined in the party following Indira Gandhi’s Assassination, he remained loyal to the party until his retirement. He was later unanimously elected as the President of India in 2012 against P.A.Sangma hence becoming the first Bengali to hold the position of President in India.
Apart from being an active politician, Dr Pranab Mukherjee is also a prolific writer, he has authored 12 books, one of which depicts his view on the Emergency. On the personal front, he was married to Suvra Mukherjee who passed away in 2015 due to heart failure, the couple has 3 children. He most certainly is one of the brightest minds India has witnessed, he is the only person to have withheld all main ports in the cabinet across the time span of any politician’s career. Pranab da’s dedication and loyalty towards the betterment of the country remains unmatched to this day, hence making him the perfect receiver of the Bharat Ratna.
