IISER(Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research), Pune is one of the most premier institutes of higher education in India. The institutes having been formally established by the Indian Parliament through the National Institutes of Technology, Science and Research(Amendment) Act, 2010 has been providing extremely quality education at the Undergraduate level. This powered by the cutting-edge research making it declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Parliament of India in 2012. This promotes them as leading institutions in the country in the field of basic sciences.
The funding for each IISER is 5 billion rupees in the first five years of establishment. Hence, it hosts some of the best facilities in colleges across India.
There are currently seven IISER institutes in India, namely, IISER Pune in Maharashtra, IISER Kolkata in West Bengal, IISER Mohali in Punjab, IISER Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, IISER Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, IISER Berhampur in Odisha and IISER Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.
IISER Pune offers three programs for students and researchers. It offers an integrated BS-MS masters program, an integrated doctoral program(int. Ph.D.) and a doctorate program(Ph.D.). The integrated BS-MS course is a five-year dual degree program for science students. It features classroom learning with integrated with research. The integrated Ph.D. program at IISER Pune is aimed at students who wish to pursue a career in research. Students with an excellent academic record can apply for the i-PhD program upon completion of a Bachelors’s degree in any branch of science. The course combines curricula for masters and doctorate degrees into a single integrated program with a blend of course work and research projects.
The campus is extensive, sizing up to nearly 98 acres. It had begun functioning in the NCL campus, and two years later in 2008 shifted to a hired transit campus where the classrooms, research laboratories, and libraries were promptly shifted. The campus has 37,000 sq. mt of academic space and 80,000 sq. mt of residential space. It is modern, with green, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly buildings. It boasts of a modernized lecture hall complex, a main academic building, and a central dining building. The campus also consists of a 128-room guesthouse – cum – mini-convention center, students’ hostels, and guest rooms. A modern indoor and outdoor complex for sports and faculty and staff housing is currently being constructed.
IISER being one of the best institutions in India, has a strict and rigorous process for admission. Students who have passed 10+2 with science as their choice of the stream are eligible to apply. There are three methods of obtaining admission into IISER: through Kishore Vigyan Protsahan Yojana(KVPY), through Joint Entrance Exam Advanced for IITs or State or Central Board examinations. Successfully passing the written and interview rounds in KVPY is qualified. In the JEE(A) channel, the rank should be within 10,000, and in the case of SCB, the specified cut-off should be cleared.
IISER is one of the leading institutes in terms of research and has collaborated with multiple organizations. The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG), Germany, The Centre National De La Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), France and Ecole normale supérieure (ENS) Networks, France are a few. It has also relations with multiple international institutions such as Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP), France, New Mexico State University, USA and The University of Melbourne, Australia. These institutions cooperate and collaborate on cutting-edge technology and sciences for the betterment of life.
